What is Blue Monday?
Blue Monday is the third Monday in January and is said to be the most depressing day of the year.
This is apparently due to the highs of the festive period now being truly behind us, the reality of the cost of that period hitting us, and the continued dark, wet weather getting the best of us.
However, this is only a myth coined by the travel company Sky Travel.
We actually like the Samaritan's take on it instead. The charity has coined the term "Brew Monday" for the day which has a much more positive spin to it. They encourage people to reach out to those they know for a catch-up over a cup of tea to make sure they're feeling alright or help brighten up their day.
While you're feeling good from our playlist, why don't you task yourself to reach out to one person today?
Because while Blue Monday is a myth, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) isn't.
Symptoms of being sad include:
- Depression
- Sleep problems
- Lethargy
- Overeating
- Irritability
- Feeling down and unsociable
If you're aware that you might have a case of the SAD, or want to be proactive in avoiding it, here are some solutions to help you through:
- Exercise (can be as gentle as yoga)
- Get outdoors when they're sunlight
- Eat healthily
- Speak to family or friends
- Write down what you're grateful for
- Dance
- Repeat positive affirmations
We hope this helps you get through your next few hours, day, week, or month. Just know that you're not alone in feeling blue and that thankfully there are a number of ways you can help lift your spirits.
